Train and Work in Trades with SCIDES

Did you know that there are over 100 trades you can get certified in, in British Columbia? Working as a certified tradesperson does not only provide a good income, trades careers are often described as a very satisfying type of work, because you are generally working with your hands and can see tangible progress at the end of the day. What is it that you love to do? There’s probably a trade for that!

SCIDES wants to support your journey into trades, and we have two fantastic programs we would like to introduce: the Work in Trades and the Train in Trades programs. Each can be taken independently of each other, and in any order, and both of them will give you a headstart on your career and lots of other benefits.

Here is an overview:

Train in Trades

You can attend a trades training class at a local high school, a partner post-secondary institution or an ITA-certified training facility. You’ll learn from skilled instructors and earn credits that count towards your high school diploma and Level 1 of your technical trades training. 

This program is a great fit for you if you’re in grades 11 or 12, have a plan in place to graduate, and have found a trade you like and want to explore further.

You’ll get the first portion of your Level 1 trades training tuition-free, plus earn up to 16 high school credits and post-secondary institute credits. This type of program is also known as dual-credit, and it’s only available for the Train in Trades program, not the Work in Trades. What a fantastic head start!

The program is recognized and supported by the ITA (Industry Training Authority); you can find out all the details and browse trade options on their website.

Work in Trades

If you want to get started with on-the-job training, this program might be a good fit for you. You will take home a paycheque, get a headstart on the work-based training of a trades apprenticeship by logging 480 training hours towards your credentials, earn up to 16 credits towards your high school diploma (4 courses with 4 credits each), and maybe even earn a $1,000 award! Just like for the Train in Trades program, you have to be in grade 11 or 12, and need a plan in place to graduate. You will receive a $1,000 tax credit after completion of your Level 1 training, and be eligible to receive a $1,000 scholarship.

*Please note that while the school district will pay for tuition, you will still be responsible for books and tools. However, there may be grant opportunities available.*
