Do you love making art? Or, have you had limited experience with art making, but would love to learn some great new art skills? This course provides a foundation in art media, methods and appreciation. Students will sample both 2 and 3-dimensional art experiences in drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking. Emphasis is placed on the development of imagery and the acquisition of the skills and knowledge necessary for a basic understanding of art.

So, you have decided to take English 8 online, which is exciting. You have some interesting experiences ahead of you.
You will start by telling a story of your own. Students will have the opportunity to experience the editing process and will plan, adjust, and submit a finalized creative writing piece.
After that, you will complete a novel study on the classic The Outsiders—“Only gold can stay” A novel about youth and the pressures of peer groups.
Next, you will learn about poetry, read some poems written by others and write some of your own. You will wrap up by learning about finding information, using it ethically, and evaluating the source of that information.
Get started by going through the introductory module. It shouldn't take you long, but it will give you an idea of the skills that you will need to do well in this course.

This is an introductory language course in which students will begin to develop oral, visual, and written communication skills within the French Language. Students will experience creative Francophone works and reflect on their value and meaning. Elements of Francophone cultures within Canada and around the world will be identified and explored.

Mathematics 8
In Math 8 students will explore mathematic topics ranging from Percents to Financial Literacy with the aid of online videos, interactive practice questions, and continuous support from a teacher. Students will be given the opportunity to resubmit practice assignments to enhance understanding and potentially earn multiple attempts on unit tests by submitting corrections. Project options are also available for the summative assessments in multiple units. Students are required to complete two projects by the end of the course but are welcome to complete more if they choose. A final exam is present to help prepare students for upcoming numeracy assessments but minimally contributes to the overall course grade.

Physical and Health Education 8
The purpose of PHE 8 is to help you become healthier through an active lifestyle and to enjoy doing it! The course is comprised of a theoretical component and an activity component. Students explore the concepts of personal, social, and mental wellness and are provided with the opportunity to practice active living principles. If you play on a sports team, have a weekly workout routine, or just like to go crazy with a snowboard or water-skis, you can keep track and get credit while you are having fun! Even if you don’t consider yourself an athlete, you can create a program that suits your needs and your interests. Note that full-time SCIDES students will simultaneously earn credit for Daily Physical Activity while participating in this class. DPA requirements include participation in 150 minutes of activity each week throughout the school year for grades 8-12 students.

What are living things made of? How do atoms and molecules interact? In what ways does energy transfer from one object to another? How do plate tectonics influence the earth's geologic processes? The above big ideas are the center of the Science 8 course which is divided into the four main units of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Science. This project-based course offers students options to present learning through the completion of research, science labs, conceptual challenges, and creative demonstrations. Students also interact in conversation forums to share opinions and learnings using digital forums.There are a total of 18 learning tasks and no final exam for this class.

Social Studies 8
In this course you will examine a number of historical civilizations in Europe, the Middle East, the Far East, and Africa. You will discover many differences between these civilizations but many similarities as well. You will also learn different skills required for social studies such as note taking skills, map interpretations, comparison charts, bar graphs and climagraphs.
What exactly do we mean by "civilization"?
There was a time when people traveled from place to place, hunting for food. Once they learned to farm crops and raise animals, however, people began to gather together in common locations. The sites of these settlements were carefully located where the environment (climate, soil, water, etc.) would support large numbers of people.
Civilization is what occurred when people started to live together in these larger, permanent settlements. No longer concerned about finding enough food to eat, people could concentrate on other things, such as literature, music, science, art, and technology. Leaders were also chosen to make and enforce the rules needed for a peaceful society. This marked the beginning of an organized governmental system.
